Hosted by Jean Shafiroff, the celebration honored Austrian cultural tradition, philanthropic leadership, and the enduring bond between Vienna and New York ahead of the landmark anniversary gala.

One of New York City’s most enduring and glamorous cultural traditions took a celebratory step forward as philanthropist, television host, author, and longtime arts advocate Jean Shafiroff hosted an elegant kickoff reception for the 70th Annual Viennese Opera Ball. Held at her New York residence, the pre-holiday gathering welcomed more than 100 distinguished guests to honor the milestone anniversary of one of the city’s most prestigious white-tie galas.

The intimate reception officially launched the countdown to the landmark 70th Anniversary Ball, set to take place in 2026, and celebrated the enduring cultural and diplomatic bond between Austria and the United States.

HONORING PHILANTHROPY AND CULTURAL LEADERSHIP
The evening paid tribute not only to the Ball’s remarkable legacy, but also to the philanthropic leadership behind it. During the event, New York State Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright presented official Citations to both Jean Shafiroff and the Viennese Opera Ball, recognizing their exemplary contributions to the arts, philanthropy, and cultural exchange.

As chairwoman and longtime supporter of the organization, Shafiroff has played a pivotal role in sustaining and elevating the Ball’s mission, ensuring its continued relevance for future generations.

MUSIC, TRADITION, AND AUSTRIAN HERITAGE
True to Viennese tradition, the evening featured performances by acclaimed opera vocalists Elizabeth Sutphen, soprano, and Brandon Cedel, bass-baritone. Their performances set a fitting tone for the anniversary season, underscoring the Ball’s commitment to classical music and operatic excellence.

Guests also enjoyed Austrian white wine from Domäne Wachau, one of Austria’s most celebrated estates known for its organically farmed vineyards. The wine, generously donated by importer González Byass USA, offered a tasteful nod to Austrian heritage and craftsmanship.
